Nominations Brainstorming!

Nominations will begin in close to a week, running from June 24 through July 3.

The purpose of this post is to promote your smaller fandoms (to help ensure they make the cut), or to organize nominations for fandoms with multiple continuities (as in which fandoms can/should be combined as a larger umbrella fandom). Or, you can just chat with others about what fandoms you're nominating or hope will make it to see if you can drum up interest.

For a refresher, here's how nominations will work:

  • You can nominate up to eight fandoms.

  • We will automatically approve the top 100 fandoms with the most nominations, though it is probable we will approve more than 100 fandoms. (Last year, we had 128 fandoms in the tagset, and will likely reach or surpass that number, based on participation.) While there is no magic number of nominations a fandom needs to make the cut, as we base it on participation, your fandom will likely need at least two nominations to make it

  • Sign-ups will require a minimum of three fandoms that can be crossed with each other in each individual request, with six fandoms maximum. (You are required to make at least three requests, with five requests maximum.)

When nominations begin, we will post more detailed instructions about how to nominate on AO3. Until then, feel free to check out the FAQ.

I'm hoping a few more people have watched Ex Machina since last year. It's an interestingly creepy and very noir sci-fi film that plays with the ideas of personhood and self-determination and how those aren't always respected even for other humans:

A young programmer is selected to participate in a ground-breaking experiment in synthetic intelligence by evaluating the human qualities of a breath-taking humanoid A.I.

IMDB page, with trailer.

Okay, what I really want to ask for is Ava interacting with any of the clones from Orphan Black. But I think there's a lot of potentially interesting crossovers here.

Smaller fandoms? Okay, throwing some stuff out there - is anybody up for Big Bang Theory, Castle, Boston Legal, Scorpion? I'm sure I'll think of more later.

I am so excited!

I also have both too many and not enough fandoms I want to nominate. Ones I'd like to see in for sure:

Highlander: the Series
Forever
Psych
Leverage
Wolfblood
Houdini & Doyle

I'm also all for any of the versions of The Tomorrow People, though I think interest has finally sailed on all of them.

ETA: I'd also be really interested in The Listener, if there's anyone outside my little circle who's heard of it.

AMC's Humans could make for an interesting world to cross into. The Night Manager would also offer a rich environment, and I would be so there if someone else watches and would be interested in a crossover with Unreal.

I will keep pushing for the Vorkosigan saga until I get enough people to join me. Intergalactic intrigue, case fic setups, crazy loyalty kink potential...seriously, pick a fandom to go with it, and I'm pretty sure there's a way to make it work.

Bujold does have a relatively well-known fantasy series, and this one's on the softer side in terms of the tech, but...yeah. Definitely sci-fi.

I wasn't necessarily talking about crossing those two together; more like either one would make a good set-up to cross with someone else. But I could see Quinn (or Chet) convinces the network to let them shoot in an exotic location for a couple of days. One where Jonathan is the hotel's night manager, or with Dickie & crew as fellow guests. Of course, something like that might be too long a story to get done during the timing of the event, but ...

Yay! I'm glad someone else here wants it!

While I'm thinking about smaller sci-fi: would anyone second Killjoys if I nominate it?

It's a Canadian sci-fi show that feels somewhere between Farscape and Firefly. Bounty hunters in a system with a really corrupt governing "Company," politics and snark. I love the worldbuilding and characters SO MUCH, and they'd crossover well with both sci-fi and superheroes pretty easily.

Come on! Only 10 episodes to catch up on, with new episodes starting this July. Here's a behind-the-scenes intro, which gives you a good feel for the show without spoiling things.

I will certainly nominate Castle (which I wouldn't have thought of as small, although I'll grant that this last season has probably done a number on the organized parts of the fandom).

I will also likely nominate (as I have previously) Gargoyles and Diane Duane's "Young Wizards" series of books. I'm torn about NCIS (prime), which I followed not at all this past season given so much else running on Tuesday nights, and about Tomorrowland, which got some incredibly good stories last year but still strikes me as a very crossable fandom. And I will always think seriously about Baum's Oz books (I will get my Oz/Agent Carter story done for "Into A Bar" amnesty, though I grant that that one is proving unusually resistant to acquiring an actual plot).

I have also recently acquired a full set of original-series Star Trek DVDs, which is likely to bump my interest in that and other things Trek-ish...and I discovered just this past week that Legend (the RDA/de Lancie Western series, not the feature film) is now orderable on DVD as well.

I have enjoyed dabbling in Vorkosigan in the past but I'm coming up blank with crossovers (except for the totally crack crossover of Maia-from-Goblin-Emperor-and-Gregor-run-away-together-and-commiserate-about-being-Emperor).

Some previous popular fandoms I hope make it in this time

-The Hunger Games
-The Chronicles of Narnia
-Greek and Roman Mythology
-Harry Potter

I'd also be excited to see any of Pokémon, Kingsman, Dragonriders of Pern, Person of Interest, and Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

(Tomorrowland still has cool stories in it! And I've had Ex Machina on my to-watch list for a while.)

On my definitely nominating list so far:
Shadowhunters (TV)
Hit The Floor (TV)
Starsky & Hutch

I'd also really like to nominate some Western Classics,
Silverado
Once Upon a Time in the West
The Young Riders or The Assassination of Jesse James
Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid
open for others depending on what people might want to second?

also, White Fang, because young Ethan Hawke deserves to make out with alllll the rugged men.

Hey! I'm really sorry if this is a bothersome request, but would you consider not hardcoding font color when posting updates to this comm? I have my DW's text set to white-on-black for eye strain reasons, which means that when I try to read your updates from my reading page it looks like this.

Also, really excited for this fest! I'm hoping to see some more animanga and video game fandoms get in. Not quite sure which ones I plan to nominate just yet, though.

At the moment, I'm favoring Young Wizards, Discworld, and The Dresden Files (books, definitely; TV show of the same name, possibly), but I'm not really sure what else to go with. Shakespeare? ASOIAF? Greek and Roman Mythology? What would work best? What would be too obscure?

The three definitely on my list are:

Forever (TV)
Highlander: The Series
Horatio Hornblower (books and miniseries)

Other than that, I don't know? There's so many to choose from. Ones that have run through my mind are X-Files, Quantum Leap (both of which cross over with just about anything), Star Trek TNG, Ripper Street, Doctor Who, Torchwood, Lucifer (TV)...

That's a good one. :D But you can bring Miles and/or Simon into pretty much any canon that has detectives in it, initiate first contact with a sci-fi canon, graft the Vor caste system into anything with nobles...like I said, lots of possibilities. ;)

I want to nominate Sandman (the comics by Neil Gaiman), because they will cross with ANYTHING. Literally anything at all.

On just a this would be fun note, I would like to nominate The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Corpse Bride, and The Book of the Dead. Kids' movies with a heavy emphasis on death! Mostly brightly colored!

The Mummy series of movies, and The Librarians tv show would be a fun cross. You'd probably get people who would also like Indiana Jones, though since my friends have never carried through with their threats to tie me down and force them to watch the series, I've only seen bit and pieces and The Last Crusade.

I'm sure I'm forgetting other things.

I want to nominate my usual suspects from this exchange season, plus my latest obsession:

Forever (TV)
Supergirl (TV 2015)
Limitless (TV)
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (TV)
Miraculous Ladybug

Though based on what everyone else is listing, I may only get Forever in!

Other things I've written more than once for recently:

Star Wars: Rebels
iZombie (TV)
Brooklyn Nine-Nine (TV)

Is there any interest in any of these from anyone else?

I would be in favor of the works of Diane Duane as a suggested smaller fandom. Anybody suggested Lois McMaster Bujold yet?

(I don't know if I'll be signing up yet, but I am watching with interest.)
