2017 Beta Readers Post

Expect your assignments to arrive within the next ten minutes or so.

For now, let's open this year's beta readers post.

While we do not require stories to have a beta reader, we strongly recommend it.

If you're volunteering as a beta, please comment here! Tell us:
  • Which fandoms you can work in (full list of Crossovering fandoms)

  • How to contact you: email, @Twitter, Tumblr, Skype, PM on LJ/DW, etc.

  • If you're offering SPAG, worldbuilding, character, or plot help ... or all four!

  • An estimate of what your turnaround time is

  • Your dealbreakers, aka what you won't beta, e.g., violence, non-con, cheating, mushrooms, talking animals, etc.

Looking for a beta but none of the volunteers have listed your fandom(s)? You can leave an anonymous comment here listing the fandoms you need help with. Do not reveal other details of your assignment.

Anonymous comments will be unscreened and can be replied to by beta volunteers with their contact info.

If you're looking for a beta and are worried about revealing your assignment, you can email the mods, and we'll act as go-between on your behalf.

I am [archiveofourown.org profile] Isis, and you can contact me by DW PM or by email isiscolo@gmail.com. My beta procedure is to read through the fic and flag everything that sticks out to me, whether good or bad; this encompasses spelling, grammar, typos, repeated or omitted words, confusing bits, amazing bits, awkward phrasing, gorgeous phrasing, plot holes, and basically anything else that catches my eye. I am relatively tolerant of characterization if it seems consistent, so if you're particularly concerned about characterization, let me know. Fandoms marked with an asterisk are ones I last read/watched some time ago and probably don't remember well enough to canon-pick or evaluate characterization.

Turnaround varies depending on length, but will likely be in the 2-5 days range. I will be unavailable August 29-22 and September 19-25. No restrictions on content. I speak American English but am fine with British English, though I may not notice Americanisms, so don't ask me to Britpick.

Hello!

Please contact me at morbane@gmail.com. My turn-around time varies: at least 2 days, but up to 1 day per 1k. I will be frequently online throughout the creation period, so I should be able to tell you within 12 hours of receiving your request if I am able to fulfil the request or not.

I'm happy to offer comments on structure, worldbuilding, characterization, etc, or just spelling and grammar, or anything in between. I can also brainstorm, but it's not my strong suit and I'd prefer to do it by email rather than by chat.

I can't critique art.

Please let me know what kind of feedback you're looking for. By default, my procedure is similar to Isis'; I go through a document adding comments about flow, clarity, things that surprised me, things I particularly enjoyed, etc. I occasionally make Google suggestions or tracked changes for simple errors. I also write a summary of my thoughts before sending the document back.

Google docs, Microsoft Word, or Open/Libre Office are all possible.
